HOW TRUE BODY NUTRITION + FITNESS CAME TO BE…

True Body began with a desire to learn more about the effects of nutrition on the human systems and how that affects, largely, our appearance.

Vain? Yes. Absolutely. But if I’m not honest, then how can I call it True Body? I was bullied a lot as a teenager which drove me to improve myself in every way that I could so that I wouldn’t feel like I was inferior/second-class to those who had intimidated me. Part of that was to improve my appearance.

I began my BSc and PostGradDip. at Curtin University in Nutrition and Dietetics, and before finishing also completed Cert IV in Fitness and IV in Massage Therapy at the Australian Institute of Fitness, then starting the life-changing business TRUE BODY. I was determined to lead people down the path of healthy living, teaching them the right way to eat, train and live. But after years of studying and working in fitness and nutrition, observing how myself and clients have responded to food and exercise, I’ve realised that health is so much more than how clear your skin is or how small your waist is, and that health means different things to different people.

The dictionary defines health as either ‘the state of being free from illness or injury’ or ‘a person’s mental or physical condition’. The World Health Organisation defines health as ‘…a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”. Much more encompassing, but still doesn’t account for people who live with various lifelong illnesses who mightn’t want to be classed as unhealthy. In order to pursue health, you have to be able to define what it is that health means to YOU.

And so the purpose of True Body shifted. The focus of my healthy habits now is vitality, and prolonging the ability to function as optimally as possible for as long as possible. This includes choosing foods that nourish me; both my body and appetite, exercising; for leisure, stress relief as well as to challenge and improve my physical abilities, and giving my body and my mind opportunities to rest.

Once you define health, it’s not a goal to reach. It’s a state of being that means different things on different days. Some days will be harder to make healthier choices than others, but making them will always leave you feeling like you made the right decision. But even if you don’t, it’s ok, because tomorrow will always be another opportunity. The more often you repeat your behaviours, the sooner they will become your natural practice.

What I want is for people to be healthy and subsequently happy, and be able to live that for as long as possible. There are obviously limitations to the contribution I can make, but I can hope that my training and experience can make a little difference to those who are seeking change.

You are your own person, with your own hopes, dreams and fears. True Body values your definition of health, your choices and your knowledge of self in seeking better health.

2. Benefits of Health

With optimal health comes a better quality of life and the ability to function as optimally as possible for as long as possible. Health is something worth changing a behaviour for.

3. Evidence-based information

Evidence based information is essential in making safe and effective choices, with accurate expectations of possible outcomes.

4. Goal Setting and Support

Behaviour changes are hard. Breaking it down will help you make them. With time, repetition, accountability and support it will become natural behaviour.

5. All bodies are beautiful

Your weight is not necessarily indicative of your health, and neither is it of your beauty. All bodies are beautiful. Change must come from loving yourself.
